Sydney's National Parks

Australia's first National Park was established on 26 April 1879 not long after the world’s first ever National Park which was Yellowstone National Park listed 1872. Sydney siders can get to the park being just 29 km south of Sydney in New South Wales and easily accessible via public transport.

You may be surprised to hear that National Parks weren’t originally about conservation but rather recreation. At the time of the Royal’s declaration the automobile didn’t exist and so rail transport alone was how they were intended to be visited and can still be explored today.Β  This page will explain how to plan a visit by train or car.
